EMPLOYERS OF CHOICE NOMINATIONS OPENS

This is your opportunity to nominate Allen Health System for recognition in the Courier’s annual Employers of Choice poll. Allen has placed among the top 10 for the past several years and placed first in 2009. This recognition reminds readers we are here and helps us attract and retain associates and physicians who value a good place to work and live. It also reminds patients and donors why they support our work.

For tips on how to fill out the form, click here.

You may wonder if your opinion matters. It does. You also may wonder what to say.  The Courier site lists several criteria. Consider all the things we offer at Allen to support family life, community life and your personal growth. This survey is about how Allen measures up as a good place to work. That’s what surveyors will consider, and your comments will help them understand who we are and what we do.  Nominations close July 15, 2010. We encourage you to participate. Thanks.

Nominate here.

THANK YOU

I would like to thank all the Allen associates who were so kind to donate PTO for me during my husband, Greg’s, cancer treatments at the Mayo Clinic. Your generosity is overwhelming and words cannot express my gratitude to each and every one of you.

The Allen “CARE”  values are very much alive and well here in the hearts of the Allen family. Everyone has been so kind. Your thoughts, prayers, and concerns for Greg and myself during this stressful time have given us much encouragement and strength.

Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts.

THUMBS UP FOR ALLEN COLLEGE

Allen College has helped Iowa become second in the nation in volunteerism. According to a report released by Volunteering in America, Iowa college students rank second in the nation in volunteering within the college student demographic up from 32nd in 2006, with 41 percent of college students volunteering their time in 2009.

As a state, Iowa has the second-highest volunteer rate in the country with 38.7 percent of its residents volunteering their time in 2009, surpassing its fifth-place ranking from the year before. Utah ranks first in the country as a state and first in the college student demographic.

“We are extremely pleased with the results of this year’s ranking,” said Rachel Manuel, executive director of Iowa Campus Compact. “As the only higher education association dedicated to campus-based civic engagement, our member campuses are improving community life, while also educating its students for civic and social responsibility through service-learning, community service and civic engagement initiatives.”

Iowa’s high percentage is due in part to the 92 college students enrolled in the Iowa Campus Compact AmeriCorps program serving 300 or 450 hours of service across Iowa helping meet local community needs. Each participant recruits 10 additional volunteers throughout their term of service. Additionally, Iowa Campus Compact has 23 full-time AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and 10 VISTA Summer Associates working to increase service-learning, mobilize volunteers and strengthen local communities throughout Iowa.

Allen College is a member of Iowa Campus Compact, one of 21 member institutions in the state. The National Campus Compact is a coalition of more than 1,100 colleges and universities committed to fostering in students the values and skills of civic engagement. In the past five years, member schools have reported a 60 percent increase in service participation. Students working in areas such as literacy, health care, homelessness, voting and the environment contribute more than $5 billion in service to their communities each year. Iowa Campus Compact started in 2003 and now includes 21 member institutions.

CHRIS MATTINGLY STEPS UP

Don Hargrave has announced his retirement and relocation to Des Moines.  His last official day at Allen is today.  Don has had the Radiology Department at the hospital for six years overseeing the arrival of new equipment, new diagnostic capabilities, and improved safety and satisfaction.  Please join me in wishing Don well as he leaves the Cedar Valley to return to his home base of Des Moines.

Chris Mattingly has agreed to assume the Director role for both campuses, the UMP Imaging Department along with the Hospital campus.  Chris will build on her successes at UMP and direct the activity at Allen, building on the foundations put in place by Don.  Chris has a long tenure at Allen and is a clinically trained technologist.  Please join me in welcoming Chris to her new role as Director of the newly combined Radiology/Imaging Department.  Her contact numbers will remain the same.

Deere & Co. Health Plan Administrator Renews Contract with Allen Hospital

United Premier has renewed its contract with Allen Hospital to provide health care services for Deere & Co. wage workers, their families and retirees affiliated with United Auto Workers.

Under the new contract, Allen will continue to be the exclusive provider in the Cedar Valley.

Iowa Health System also will continue to be the exclusive provider at Finley Hospital in Dubuque and Trinity Regional Health System in the Quad-Cities. The contract in all those cities will cover 25,000 individuals.

Additionally, the contract includes non-exclusive arrangements with St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids and with Iowa Health System physicians in each hospital’s market, including the Cedar Valley.

The new six-year contract, which is expected to represent close to $100 million in annual net revenue for Iowa Health System hospitals, is wider in scope than the 2004 contract and provides Deere employees access to high quality care and much-valued continuity.
