LUAU PARTY AT THE ALLEN AUXILIARY GIFT SHOP

The stage was set.  Every volunteer was in his/her place.  The doors opened...

You received a bottle of water
to cool you off as you furiously shopped for your bargain!

The race was on.....       The friendly staff assisted with your purchase.

 Whew...that was fun!

The Gift Shop had nearly 700 Associates take advantage of the $7 gift coupon that was mailed to their homes.

All shoppers enjoyed special discounts, treats and gifts during the two-day event.  Many people returned numerous times to take advantage of the special purchases that were available.

168 people joined the Auxiliary those days, including 164 Associate members, 2 Patrons and 2 Life Memberships.  All new members received an Allen water bottle compliments of Corporate Relations.  A special “members only” event is being planned for sometime in August.  Watch the Friday Edition for more details.

Jelly Bean washable rugs, “Embellish My Story” magnetic scrapbooking accessories and pendant key rings, bracelets and necklaces were the hot items for the event.

What is the Allen Auxiliary?

The Allen Auxiliary is a membership group which has been in existence for almost as long as the Hospital has been open. The purpose of the Auxiliary is to promote interest within the community for the welfare of Allen Hospital and to be a liaison between the community and the Hospital.  The Auxiliary sponsors fundraising events and also assists in the recruitment of Volunteers.  All funds raised by the Auxiliary support Hospital and Allen College programs and projects.

How does the Auxiliary raise money?

Each fundraising event held by the Auxiliary contributes to the support the Auxiliary is able to provide to Allen Hospital, Allen College and their programs.  The largest fundraising effort by the Auxiliary is the Gift Shop, located at the Logan Avenue entrance.  Each day, Volunteers staff the gift shop so that staff, patients and visitors can shop during convenient hours.  Items in the Gift Shop include AllenWear, personal items, flowers, candy and gifts.  Gift Shop manager Sara Janssen has a wonderful inventory of items from which you may select a special gift for yourself, a patient, co-worker or a friend.  There is no sales tax charged in the Gift Shop, so every day you save an automatic 7% on your purchases.  If you haven’t visited the Gift Shop recently, we encourage you to do so.

Where does the Auxiliary money go?

Each year the Auxiliary provides scholarships to Allen College students.  The future of healthcare professionals is important to the Auxiliary.  We want to make sure there are well-educated nurses and radiographers to care for future generations.  The Auxiliary has also supported many building projects of the hospital, including the new OB unit, Allen College and redecorating the Volunteer Services office.  Additionally, the Auxiliary has provided funding that has aided in the purchase of much-needed cardiac equipment, wheelchairs, a wheelchair mover, lifeline – personal emergency response units, cafeteria and waiting room furniture, pediatric emergency cart, camera for the emergency department and much more. The Auxiliary provides a discount to every associate during their birthday month; all new associates receive a gift of AllenWear from the Auxiliary Gift Shop and recently the Auxiliary hosted an Associate Appreciation event in the Gift Shop.

Why should I join?

Doesn’t the Auxiliary sound like an organization we can all support?  By joining the Auxiliary, you support their efforts financially, but you also send a strong message that you support the organization and its mission.  At our recent Associate Appreciation event in the Gift Shop, over 160 Allen Associates joined the Auxiliary by paying annual dues.

How much does it cost?

The Auxiliary has four classes of dues-paying members.  Recently, the Auxiliary Board added the Associate membership just for Allen Associates.  Membership classes are:

Associate membership is for those who are interested in the purpose of the Auxiliary and who are employed by or volunteer at Allen Health System.  Allen Associates will have the privileges of active members but will not be required to give volunteer service. They will pay annual dues of $10.

Patron membership is for those who are interested in the purpose of the Auxiliary.  Patron members will have the privileges of active members but will not be required to give service.  They will pay annual dues of $25.

Life membership is for those who are interested in the purpose of the Auxiliary.  Life members will have the privileges of active members but will not be required to give service.  These members do not pay annual dues but will have paid or pledged $100 in a one-year period.

The mission of the Allen Auxiliary is “To support Allen Health System and its Core Values through volunteer service and financial contributions.”

    Allen College Receives Federal Grants

Allen College chancellor Dr. Jerry Durham has announced that the College has received five federal grants totaling $409,000.  The grants, from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provides funds to support disadvantaged students, to support graduate students preparing for careers as nurse educators, and to assist the College in extending the acute care and psychiatric nursing tracks of the MSN program to distant learners.  Some of the funds of the grants were provided by the  American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The funds for disadvantaged students will give scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds with financial need, many of whom are underrepresented minorities. The Nurse faculty Loan Program (NFLP) funds  will provide low-interest loans to graduate students who want to teach nursing as incentive for nurses to select careers as nurse educators.  Graduates who receive NFLP funds can have 85% of their loan forgiven if they teach full time in a nursing program following graduation.

Allen College is one of five Iowa colleges and universities to receive funds to support nursing students.  According to U.S. Senator Tom Harkin in a July 1, 2010 news release, “Today’s funding is a double win for the state of Iowa. First, it will help provide job training to Iowans to keep our workforce competitive, bring good jobs to our state and boost our economy. On top of this, the funding will improve the quality of our health professionals, helping ensure that anyone who seeks medical assistance will receive quality care.  I am also pleased that this funding will provide scholarships for disadvantaged students who may never have otherwise had the opportunity to pursue a career in medicine and earn a good paycheck to support their families. This is truly helping to support the American dream.”

Waterloo Rotary Boxes – Why We ALL Need to Help

Think for a minute about your children or children that you know – about their school, their hobbies, and how they spend their summers. While every family is different and activities may range depending on affluence, most kids are afforded opportunities to have fun, access to great educations, and allowed to just be kids.

This is far from the case in Chinandega, Nicaragua. The families there lack food and basic necessities, so their children spend their hours scavenging in the dump for anything that could be sold or used for food just to survive. After hearing the stories of these children, the Downtown Rotary Club started the shoebox project in conjunction with a school in Nicaragua. The shoeboxes – filled with clothing, basic essentials and school supplies (and maybe a toy or two!) - are highly coveted by the children, but what’s even better is that the recipients must be enrolled in the school to be on the list to receive a shoebox. In addition to the education they receive, they are guaranteed a meal every day at the school, so they don’t have to scavenge for food either. So, besides the knowledge that we’re helping a child be clothed and provided for with each shoebox we fill (it’s the only Christmas present they’ll get), we also get the satisfaction of knowing that these children are receiving an education and healthy meals. In fact, since the project began in 2001, 7 children (that probably wouldn’t have graduated high school without the help of the shoeboxes and volunteers) have gone on to graduate college.

In order to fill the 2,400 shoeboxes, the Downtown Rotary Club has asked companies to fill even more shoeboxes. They’ve asked Allen Health System to fill 100 boxes – but I’m confident we can do even more. This is a great project to teach our own kids about helping others who are less fortunate than us. And at a cost of $25-30 per shoebox (less if you take advantage of summer sales!) it’s hard to turn down this opportunity to help a child.

If you are interested in filling a shoebox, please contact Angie in the Foundation office – 235-3960 or fullerad@ihs.org. Thank you for helping!
