ROSEWOOD SPECIAL STORY
I'd like to thank my staff for their caring ways. Rosewood has retired Allen associates and my staff took it upon themselves to personally invite them to attend the Allen Associate Picnic. You have no idea how much it meant to them to be included in this event. Leona Flynn said, "We need to take a picture of this so that the hospital knows how great our staff is. It is great they include us. Allen is still a very important part of our lives even though we have retired from Allen." Elsie said "You always know how to make us feel special," with tears in her eyes. Della voiced her appeciation to my staff member Tina Cook by saying, "Thanks so much, but you sure didn't have to - I don't work there anymore." Tina told her that she would always be a part of Allen.
I can't tell you how proud I was of my staff to take such pride in our retired associates. The retirees not only remain a vital part to our Rosewood community, but also to Allen Hospital. Our group included the following retirees: Leona Flynn (Laboratory Services) Elsie Kehe (Laundry Services) Ethel Baer (Distribution Services) and Della Theile (Clinical Services-House Supervisor). - Julie Christianson

HOPE LIVES
The Beyond Pink TEAM is in their fourth year of their Plant it Pink campaign. More than 15,000 bulbs have already been planted in the Cedar Valley, and some as far away as Oregon. The goal of the Beyond Pink TEAM is to have each spring abloom with pink tulips to honor those living with breast cancer and to remind us of the hope new treatments and research brings. Each year, we offfer the Pink Impression tulip, a large, goblet-shaped flower on tall, strong stems, 20-22" tall, that is a soft pink maturing to deep rose. This is the third year we have offered a second choice. This year we selected Elegant Lady, an elegant tulip with pointed, lily shaped petals that are a soft yellow with violet-red edges, and stands 24" tall. Click here for order form. A check made out to the Beyond Pink TEAM can be mail along with this coupon. You may contact Dee Hughes at 3179 with questions. Thank you for supporting us!

ST. PAUL'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH RECOGNIZED AT
27TH ANNUAL GOVERNOR'S VOLUNTEER AWARDS
Our Partner in Eduction, St. Paul's Church, received the Governor's Volunteer Award from Governor Culver during a special recognition on Thursday, July 22.
The Governor’s Volunteer Awards (GVA) program was created in 1982, with inaugural awards presented in 1983. The program has grown from a small program only available to state agencies to its present function of providing all Iowa nonprofit, charitable, and government organizations with an easy and effective way to honor their volunteers with a prestigious state-level recognition award.
St. Paul's United Methodist Church (Waterloo) was honored with a Group Disaster Volunteer Award for their work before, during and after the federal disaster declared flooding in June, 2008. They were instrumental early-on in communications locally, statewide and nationally. They helped potential volunteers to realize the need in Waterloo and the surrounding counties, and were instrumentally involved from those early days on; helping to connect incoming volunteers and agencies, including United Methodist Volunteers In Mission, World Hope, Samaritan's Purse, Nechama, Episcopal Relief & Development Disaster Response (collaborating with St. Luke's Episcopal Church Leaders); with those in need. The flooding disaster came soon after the tornado disasters affecting Parkersburg, New Hampton and Dunkerton areas, and much of the volunteer assistance that came to and through St. Paul's UMC in Summer 2008 overlapped and enhanced the abilities of each.
The church continues to host occasional volunteer groups coming to the area. They also continue in meetings and training sessions provided by Waterloo and Black Hawk County agencies, in order to be ready to assist as disaster response may be needed in the future.
Congratulations!!!!
