Meet the MAKO
|
Allen's new MAKO orthopedic surgical robot will be on display in the South Dining Room of Allen Hospital on Thursday, November 4. Stop by to see how this new technology will help our patients suffering from early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. MAKOplasty permits precise partial knee replacement to patients who otherwise would require total knee replacement. Allen is the first hospital in Iowa to offer MAKO technology. MAKO representatives will be on hand to answer your questions. We encourage you see this newest addition to Allen's surgical services throughout the day on Thursday, November 4.

Why I support the Cedar Valley United Way
A young man loses his job. He has two young children and a wife at home, and his wife is disabled and unable to work more than 20 hours a week. He has an interview but then the family car breaks down. Where can he go for help?
The YWCA runs after school daycare programs for children, and offers generous discounts for families who need financial assistance. Who helps make up the difference in daycare costs?

Allen Foundation, College and Women’s Health staff are on a mission to get all Allen Associates to LIVE UNITED!
|
|
The Northeast Iowa Food Bank helps feed thousands of people every year. The food is primarily donated to the food bank, but who helps cover the costs to keep the food bank open?
The answer to all three of these questions is the Cedar Valley United Way. These are just three examples of THOUSANDS of reasons I have for supporting the Cedar Valley United Way. So many worthwhile organizations that exist in our community are here because of grants from United Way, and because I care about my community, I want to help the United Way help others. I pledged to ‘LIVE UNITED’ and I hope you will too.
Visit www.cedarvalleyunitedway.org for more information, and watch your mail for your personal pledge form.

Thoughts from Lois Bonefas Lessons Learned in 41 years at Allen Hospital
|
When asked to reflect on this, my mind immediately went to “all we really need to know about how to live and what to do we learned in Kindergarten- what we learn in the sand pile at school.” Well, I relearned many of those lessons, but have added a few more over the past 41 years, in many different departments at Allen.
Be open to change and challenge – you go places you never dreamed of at the start of your journey.
- When I started at Allen, as a staff nurse in OB in 1969, I never dreamed I would end up spending over 12 years in the Operating Room and be part of the first open heart surgery at Allen. Then I went to the Cardiac Cath Lab as Nurse Manager for over 12 years, and then 12 years as a director.
Medical advances come fast and furious and you have to embrace them.
- I learned this most during my years in Radiology and the Cath Lab. When I began in the Cath Lab in 1984, coronary balloon angioplasty was in its infancy. We have seen increased success with opening blocked vessels as we grew in knowledge and technology. And the advances in imaging and new surgical advances just keep coming………
Technological advances don’t make up for not treating all patients fairly and with compassion.
- Health care has become more complicated and the danger of losing the basics of caring for patients can be real. During complicated technical procedures, when patients are especially frightened, extra communication and personal caring make the difference for the patients and their families.
Good communication involves being present - listening.
- This was a difficult lesson that I really had to concentrate very hard on in order to learn- especially when I had lots of things on my mind. Multi-tasking doesn’t work when you truly need to be present.
It’s okay to be a manager and a friend.
- When you go through personal or professional crises, the support of a leader or a person who reports to you, who knows and cares about you as a whole person, means the world to you. I have been so fortunate to have these people in my life at Allen and I will miss them.
Work is a great place to find joy and have fun.
- Life is certainly joyful when you can help others in their time of need, no matter how difficult or serious the situation is. Joy is something you feel when you give the best of yourself for another.
- A good sense of humor helps to lighten the load of serious work.
Good memories are great gifts. Thank you to Allen Hospital and all of you who have been part of those for me over the past 41 years. I wish you success and happiness as you continue to advance Allen Quality and AllenCARE.
With appreciation, Lois

National Orthopaedic Nurses Day - October 30
Musculoskeletal disease is a major health problem that affects all ages. Conditions such as congenital diseases of infants, trauma resulting from vehicular accidents and degenerative diseases of the aged, strike 23 million Americans.
