Patient Rounding Coming in January
It’s gratifying when patients recognize excellent care. I recently received a letter from a patient who stayed at Allen during November. In part she wrote, “Because of Dr. Singh, along with the doctors on your staff…I believe my life was saved… I also had great care from the nurses and aides during my stay. A couple of nurses stand out: Linda S., Mary Lou and Laura…”
While Christmas is the season of giving, Allen has staff who give every day, and our gift of caring is truly appreciated by patients like this one.

Starting in January, members of Allen’s Administrative Council (including me) will be going to the patient floors once every two weeks to conduct patient rounds. The rounds will consist of visiting with some patients and asking for their feedback regarding the care we’re providing them. We’ll also be asking our patients some specific questions about their care. Our intent is to hear directly what they like and don’t like about Allen. If they indicate there is a problem with their care, our goal will be to address it as quickly as possible. At the same time, we want to hear about and recognize employees who are providing outstanding care.
Thanks for all that you do here at Allen Health System. Believe me, it's important work. I hope you enjoy the Christmas holiday with your family and friends.

A Special Visit on December 23
Allen Hospital received a special visit by the Dike-New Hartford Girls and Boys Basketball team and their coaches. As a lesson in compassion and caring, they were asked by their coaches to seek donations of toys and videos for our pediatric and mental health units. As you can see, they did a fabulous job. They truly give us hope for the future with their joyful spirit and caring ways. Allen associates thank you!
An Admitting Christmas Story
Twas’ the night before Christmas, when all thru the house
Lots of creatures were stirring (hopefully not a mouse)
The nurses were stationed by bedsides with care
In hopes that their shift end would soon be there
The patients were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of discharge danced in their heads
And Jodi in her office, and I in my seat
Had just settled in for a long work day’s feat
When in the ER there rose such a clatter
We sent Jesse and Maggie to see what was the matter
Away to the Heart center they flew like a flash
And ran into Linda and Lindsey, who joined the mad dash
The desk was so busy, patients lined up to the door
With Bonnie and Laura still checking in more!
Tennille at the switchboard, answering call after call
Anne and Melvinna trying to help them all
Sally and Sandy and Jody down front
Trying to keep all their phone calls caught up
Tucked away safely in their respective labs
Were Lynda and Meagan and Ashley so fab
Then Sharon showed up, with wisdom to help
She got on the phone and gave such a yelp
“Come Lori, come Katie, come Lucille and Eileen!
Please Brooke, Robyn, or Brenna! Please Liz or Shareen!”
And one by one they all walked in the door
Worked hard thru the evening then collapsed on the floor
They checked in babies and children and women and men
Then in came the night shift, Dionne and Jen!
Everyone sighed, such a big relief!
Finally time to head home for some sleep.
Heading to my car I heard a loud voice say
“Merry Christmas to all, and Geez, what a day!”

100 Great Iowa Nurses Nomination Open
Nominations are open for the 7th annual Great Iowa Nurses recognition. The program honors nurses whose courage, competence and commitment to patients and the nursing profession stand out above all others.

Allen has had 22 nurses honored in the first six years of the program. The key to producing winners is submitting compelling nominations. You can pick up nomination forms in Clinical Services starting December 15. You also may nominate online effective immediately at
www.greatnurses.org.
Nominations must be e-mailed or postmarked by December 31, 2010.
