Earlier this year, administration made the decision to continue utilizing Joint Commission for our hospital’s accreditation rather than DNV (Det Norske Veritas, headquartered in Norway).  Both companies are approved by Medicare.  DNV is newer to the accreditation business and focuses on standards that are different from Joint Commission's.  The vast majority of hospitals in Iowa and other states still use Joint Commission for accreditation.

We undergo a site survey by the Joint Commission every three years. Allen Hospital is due for one anytime now.  Since the surveys are unannounced, we no longer know exactly when surveyors will drop in. Being ready is the key to success.

Joint Commission has moved away from just reviewing policies and procedures.  Although they still do this, they spend considerable time on patient units reviewing charts and asking questions of employees and patients.  All of us should be knowledgeable about Allen Hospital’s mission and vision. See the box below for the current mission and vision statements.  Surveyors look for a variety of things including outdated medications, responsiveness to the patient’s needs, appropriate documentation, effectiveness of our performance improvement efforts and the extent to which we protect patient confidentiality.  These are all things we should be doing routinely, and I expect we will be able to convey that message to the surveyors. A number of hospital managers have been serving as chapter leaders by reviewing specific chapters of the Joint Commission manual and then working to ensure that we are in compliance with the standards in those chapters.

Make no mistake about it: these surveys are important.  Most people, even non-health care professionals, understand what the Joint Commission is and the importance of being accredited.  Loss of accreditation by the Joint Commission can mean that Medicare will no longer fund the hospital for services provided.  Let’s show the Joint Commission what a great hospital Allen is.

The Board of Directors has restated the Allen Hospital mission and
vision statements. Here are the 2011 updates:

The mission of Allen Hospital is to improve the health care of the people
and communities we serve.

The vision of Allen Hospital is to provide the  best outcome for every
patient every time.

CARE Counts Luncheon Corrections

      Correction:
Left: Dr. Sargent, Dr. Crandall and John Knox, CEO.

We apologize for omitting Shannon Lindeland's Care Counts Ambassador stories in last week's Friday Edition.  Please read her stories below:

We had a patient who was homeless and had lived a hard life.  Many would have written him off as a lost cause, but Shannon spent a lot of time trying to educate him on changing his life style so that he would have a better life.  She spent additional time calling different pharmacies, trying to find a pharmacy that had the cheapest prices for the patient so that he would be more apt to be compliant.  The patient was discharged and two days later, he arrived at our nurses station with a beautiful mum plant for all the staff that cared for him and treated him well.  He also gave a special thank-you card to Shannon for all the time she spent helping him.

Another story - Shannon was taking care of a patient who suffered a stroke post- op.  He was aphasic and was getting frustrated that he wasn't getting across to staff what his needs were.  Shannon took the time to sit down with him and listened to him until he finally was able to say that he wanted to sleep in his own bed at home!

Shannon had many other tasks she could have been doing, but she knew it meant a lot to the patient to show patience as he struggled with his ability to express himself. This is what Shannon does every day. She makes sure the patients get what they need.  You should have seen the smile on the patient's face and the hug he gave Shannon when he finally got across to her what he was saying!

Way to go Shannon!
