Legislation That Encourages
Coordinated Care

On Wednesday, Bill Leaver CEO of Iowa Health System, Cheri Bustos, Vice President of Communication for Iowa Health, Jim Waterbury and I met with the editorial staff of The Courier.  We discussed the implications of health care reform and the steps that Iowa Health System and Allen Health System are taking to meet the challenge of reform.  Under the new law, compensation for care will compensate providers for best care rather than just for more care. Hospitals will be incented based on their outcomes. This legislation encourages coordinated care. Money has been allocated to experiment with different models to accomplish this, including the Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) that we have discussed.  Here are some of the things IHS is doing to prepare for the change:

  • Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge is piloting an Accountable Care Organization with a revised payment structure.
  • Iowa Health Des Moines is developing a payment reform model based on bundling of payments, starting with reducing the costs of a single procedure: total knee replacement.
  • The entire health system is implementing a new health information system- Epic -that will allow all of us to go paperless.
  • A Physician Leadership Academy has been created to provide a master’s level program for our most qualified physicians to learn leadership and administration level skills. This moves us towards greater involvement of physicians in leadership.

Here at Allen, we are focusing on increasing our value by initiatives to reduce readmissions, reduce falls and hospital acquired infections, improve patient satisfaction scores and improve care coordination. We have much to do, but I am confident that we will make the strides necessary to meet the challenge of health care reform.  You can read more about this in Bill leaver’s guest editorial in The Courier this Sunday, March 20.

American Heart Association Heart Walk News

Cupcake War Results!
Thank you to all associates who purchased cupcakes during the Cupcake War on Thursday! The teams from Admissions and Ambulatory Surgery both baked their hearts out and had a great display of tempting treats for sale. Throughout the day, battles were won by both sides, first with Vonice’s amazing carmel cupcakes and then with Sharon’s adorable pink pig cupcakes. Although it was very close, Admissions finished the day as the Cupcake War Champion.

However, in the end, the real winner is the American Heart Association. $1,040 was raised and will be donated to the AHA during the Heart Walk. Thank you, bakers, for all your hard work in the kitchen, and thank you associates for purchasing and enjoying the fruits of their labor!

Watch the Friday Edition for more Heart Walk fundraisers coming up!

Sleep Tips for Shift Workers

Sleep Tips for Shift Workers from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine

  • If you work rotating shifts, ask your manager to schedule your shifts “clockwise.” This means that your new shift will have a start time that is later than your last shift.
  • Take a nap during a break in your shift or before reporting for a night shift. Even a nap of just 20 to 30 minutes can improve your alertness on the job.
  • Arrange for someone to pick you up after a night shift, or take a bus or cab home. Drowsy driving can put your life and the lives of other drivers at risk.
  • Try to keep the same schedule on work days and days off. Keeping a routine helps your body know when to be alert and when to sleep.
  • Plan ahead for a major change in a shift-work schedule. Begin to alter your sleep time a few days in advance. This will make it easier for your body to adjust. See the example below.
  • Use moderate amounts of caffeine to help you stay alert on the job.
Ask your doctor if medications, melatonin or bright light therapy might help you.
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight if you need to sleep during the day.
Make sure others in your home are aware of your work schedule. They should keep the home quiet when they know that you need to sleep.
  • Talk to a sleep specialist if you have an ongoing sleep problem.

Example: Adjusting Your Sleep Schedule to Change from an Evening Shift to a Night Shift

A Reminder From the Spiritual CARE Team

Worship experiences are available for any family, escorted patients, and/or associates in the Chapel at noon on Sundays.  The Chaplain will not be in the Chapel waiting for worshipers; he or she will need to be paged.  If you are interested, please page Chaplain Butch Lewellin or Chaplain Patience Johnson (or the chaplain on duty that Sunday) and a chaplain will respond by meeting in the Chapel and leading a worship experience that will be 30 to 45 minutes long.  The universal page number for all Allen chaplains is “1311”.

In addition, 30-minute devotions are regularly offered in the Chapel at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  One does not have to page a chaplain for these devotions; all chaplains available are scheduled to gather for the weekday devotions as a matter of course.

Thank you. The Allen Spiritual Care Team
