Below is an update of where we stand with respect to the Share Our Success Allen Associate incentive plan. The last column of the chart (Actual) shows you the first quarter 2011 results with the exception of risk-adjusted mortality. Unfortunately, that data is not available at this time.
You have made a huge impact on inpatient and emergency department patient satisfaction. Inpatient satisfaction moved to a raw score of 87.1, which puts us at the 80th percentile rank (top 20%). This is amazing when you consider that we were at the 40th percentile rank at the end of 2010. Likewise the Emergency Department moved to 86.7, which puts them at the 75th percentile rank - up from 55 in 2010. Both these areas achieved maximum scores in terms of the incentive.
|
Outpatient satisfaction continued to make modest improvement but stands at 91.8 (the 35th percentile rank). This area met threshold. Ambulatory scores actually declined slightly to 91.6 (35th percentile) and did not hit the threshold level.
Financially, March was very strong with solid volume and good cost control. This helped offset January and February and moved us to maximum achievement on the incentive grid for the first quarter 2011. So if the year was over today, the payout would be at the maximum level for three of the indicators, threshold for one, no payment for one (Ambulatory), and the risk-adjusted mortality indicator is undetermined at this point.

You need to be really proud of the impact we have made in such a short period of time. The new updated Press Ganey reports will be going up on each unit next week. Keep looking for opportunities to improve. You have time to move all these goals to maximum achievement, and I sincerely hope we do. Thank you for a strong first quarter.
Just a reminder - to participate in the 2011 Share Our Success plan, you also must attend 75% of Open Forum meetings held and get your flu vaccination.

BODY WORLDS Vital Coming to Iowa
BODY WORLDS Vital, presented by Iowa Health System and Kemin Industries, Inc., will open at the Science Center of Iowa and Blank IMAX Dome Theater (SCI) May 7, 2011 for a limited engagement.
BODY WORLDS Vital is the original anatomical exhibition displaying authentic human bodies, willed by donors through the Institute for Plastination’s Body Donor Program, and preserved using a process called plastination. Plastination is a groundbreaking process in which specimen or plastinates are preserved in real-life poses.
The purpose of BODY WORLDS Vital is to educate Americans on common diseases and preventive care and to encourage them toward living a healthy lifestyle. The exhibition is comprised of whole body plastinates as well as individual organs and translucent body slices that give a complete illustration of how the human body functions.
Since 1995, more than 32 million visitors worldwide have experienced the BODY WORLDS exhibitions. Central Iowa will be the smallest market in the U.S. to present this internationally-renowned educational series.
Iowa Health - Des Moines and Grand View University will sponsor the IMAX film, The Human Body, a documentary film. The Human Body reveals the incredible story of life with a look at the biological processes in astonishing detail through the use of groundbreaking computer graphics and stunning real-life images. This is the story of what takes place beneath the skin and gives viewers the ability to see the extraordinary accomplishments of our everyday lives.
Tickets will be available for all IHS associates at a discounted rate. That includes all Allen associates. More information will be coming soon on how to purchase discount tickets. For more information on the BODY WORLDS Vital exhibition, visit www.sciowa.org/bodyworldsvital.

April 24-30 is National Lab Professionals Week
National Lab Professionals week is April 24-30, 2011. Laboratory professionals represent a key component in the diagnostic quality of any healthcare facility. They are responsible for helping physicians diagnose through testing many diseases and disease states. A series of blood tests taken in the lab can provide a wealth of understanding to your physician, from anemia to cardiac distress. A tissue sample sent to pathology can help with early detection for cancer or diagnosis of benign disease states. A swab from a wound sent to microbiology can help determine if appropriate antibiotics have been administered.
There are many different job classifications within the medical laboratory. Cytologists and histologists, among other things, help pathologists process surgical and gynecological samples that are reviewed for abnormal cells. Phlebotomists collect blood samples that are brought to the lab to be tested. Medical technology staff perform testing on blood, urine, CSF and other samples. Technologists are trained in many areas: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology and urinalysis and must prove yearly competency in any area they work. There are many support staff as well that help keep the office running smoothly. Office professionals order and register almost all samples that come to the lab for testing. They also contact physician offices to notify them of issues or concerns with samples we receive.
In 2010, the Allen Laboratory Services performed 1,143,342 billed tests and 150,000 venipunctures. Please help celebrate 2011 National Lab Professionals Week with Allen Hospital Laboratory, UMP Laboratory, and PMP Laboratory staff.

Allen Green Team: Calling All Green Thumbs!
In celebration of Earth Day today, the Allen Green Team announces a number of wildflower projects where we need your help! In May or early June, a number of projects will be planted by Allen associates and community volunteers with funding from the Allen Auxiliary and the Black Hawk Soil and Water Conservation District. The gardens include a bog, a rain garden, a double crescent wildflower garden with an arbor, sidewalk benches and Allen sign landscapes. Signage is planned to explain the purpose for each garden and who sponsored the project. Becky Stansbury, Horticulturist at the Young Green House at the George Washington Carver Academy has landscaped all these projects.
If you or a group of friends from your department or community would like to be involved in any of these projects, please see the display in the cafeteria where you can sign up to volunteer. For more information, contact Teri Ettelson at ettelstt@ihs.org.
Projects include:
- A high school student has volunteered to plant grasses to form a bog in front of Barrett Forum at Allen College. Other volunteers are needed for this project, which will be planted on May 14 at 9 a.m.
- An Eagle Scout candidate, under the guidance of Phil Schuppert, a watershed specialist of the Black Hawk Soil and Water Conservation District, will plant a rain garden.
- 6th grade students from George Washington Carver Academy (Allen’s Partner in Education) will be planting a wildflower garden.
- An arbor-shaded wildflower garden, to be located outside the door near the chapel, will be planted. Volunteers are needed for this project.
- Benches along the sidewalk from Allen Hospital to Allen College will be placed there by Eagle Scout.
- Former Allen associate Steve Buckles will landscape around one of the Allen directional signs at the corner of Columbia and Dale. Additional volunteers are needed to help landscape other Allen directional signs (materials will be provided).
