Waterloo Events

Allen College celebrated another historic day this week with Thursday’s formal ground breaking for its new addition, Winter Hall.  Carlton and Thelma Winter owned and operated six Ben Franklin stores in Waterloo.  They loved their business and their customers and were quietly charitable throughout their lives.  Carlton passed away in 2000 and Thelma in 2008.   In their estate, they left $2 million to Allen College.  $1.5 million of their gift will support this new facility, and the remaining $500,000 of their bequest will support two new scholarship endowments at Allen College. Their gift, along with more than 600 other gifts from donors and Allen associates, made it possible to begin this much-needed project.  Thanks go to the Foundation - Jim Waterbury, Matt Rolinger, Angie Fuller and Mary Kunkle - as well as Dr. Jerry Durham and his Allen College staff for their significant fund-raising efforts.

The success of Allen College is due to the leadership of Dr. Jerry Durham, his outstanding staff and the Allen College Board of Directors.  They have successfully expanded the college by establishing a reputation for excellence and new program development.  Provision of this much needed space will allow us to continue producing tomorrow’s well-educated, well-trained healthcare professionals.

This week we also celebrated those associates who received recognition for unusual displays of the Allen CARE values.  A CARE Counts luncheon was held, outstanding stories were told, and awards were given. We appreciate all the nominees and winners.

The Allen Hospital Board of Directors at their Tuesday meeting approved a proposal to move forward with the development of an acute inpatient rehabilitation unit.  We have studied this for some time and feel strongly that we can provide a top-notch service for patients in a unit that will also be economically viable.  Renovation of the area formerly occupied by the skilled nursing unit will occur this year to accommodate the new service.  We will discuss this more at the June Open Forums.

Have a wonderful Memorial Weekend.

Winter Hall Groundbreaking

Two hundred donors, friends and associates gathered to break ground for Winter Hall on the Allen College campus May 26. The new building will include classrooms, meeting rooms and offices for the College’s continuing expansion. Allen College has grown to 500 students, with particularly robust growth in graduate programs the past few years. Chancellor Dr. Jerry Durham foresees the day enrollment will reach 600, particularly now that new space is on the way.

Winter Hall is named for Thelma and Carlton Winter, longtime Waterloo retailers who lived quiet, hardworking lives and then surprised everyone by leaving $13 million in community bequests in their will. Allen College was the recipient of a $2 million gift. Winter Hall is scheduled to open in August 2012. It will stand between Gerard Hall and Barrett Forum on the Allen College campus, north of Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

Patient Safety Survey Reminder

There’s still time to participate in this year’s patient safety culture survey. All employees are encouraged to spend 10 minutes completing this anonymous questionnaire that provides the opportunity to share your ideas about improving care at Allen.

This year, all Iowa Health System senior affiliate hospitals are continuing their participation in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Culture Survey, which is used by more than 600 hospitals nationwide.

By completing this survey, you’ll play an important role in providing an accurate picture of patient safety at Allen. At the same time, your feedback will allow us to compare results with last year’s survey and evaluate our progress addressing any areas of concern.

The survey is also available on our intranet through June 6. For more information, please contact Annette Burke, Risk Manager, at burkeam@ihs.org or (319) 235-3710.

Care Counts Luncheon

A CARE Counts Luncheon was hosted on May 25 honoring a special group of associates.  They include 17 CARE Counts All-Star associates and providers and 5 CARE Counts Ambassadors.   The Allen associates were selected from a pool of 48 nominations.

What defines a CARE Counts All-Star and Ambassador?  Our CARE Counts All-Stars are first nominated by peers, patients, or leaders and then selected by a recognition team for their above and beyond demonstration of the CARE values.

CARE Counts Ambassadors are associates who have received the CARE Counts All-Star recognition previously but continue to be nominated.  They are recognized as Ambassadors for their ongoing demonstration of AllenCare.

Thank you to those who braved the wet weather to walk in support of the American Heart Association’s mission. Special thanks goes to each associate who helped raise money – the fundraising efforts by Allen associates raised over $14,000 to go toward heart disease and stroke research.

Inspirational Pause
by Chaplain Butch Lewellin

A person wrote to Rabbi Rami Shapiro: “I’m not really religious, but I am spiritual, which some friends find odd.  Do I have to be religious in order to be spiritual?”   The Rabbi answered: “Not at all.  Being religious means belonging to a specific faith and conforming to its teachings and practices.  Being spiritual means living your life in a manner that cultivates universal justice, gratitude, and compassion.  Being religious and being spiritual are not mutually exclusive, and there are religions that promote both.  Unfortunately, there are also religions that promote an ‘us versus them’ attitude that limits justice, gratitude, and compassion to the in-group only.  Celebrate the former; beware the latter.”   (Used by permission of the Spirituality & Health magazine).

Think about it—and live good!
