Consultants from Press Ganey have begun working with our staff in the areas of surgical services and the emergency department. On June 1st a multi-disciplinary committee comprised of surgeons from the various specialties, along with representatives from administration, management and Press Ganey, met to review issues that need to be addressed in order to improve our surgical services. At the same time, Press Ganey is helping us evaluate ways we can better process patients in the emergency department. In the end, these changes will help us further improve the quality of service we provide and improve patient satisfaction with Allen Hospital.

We have joined Thomson Reuters “Care Discovery” data base program and are now starting to get timely reports that compare our complication and mortality rates, length of stay and charges to the top 10% of medium community hospitals across the country. Our risk-adjusted mortality rate and average length of stay is very close to the top 10%,

but our complication rate increased and far exceeded the top 10%. We are drilling into why this occurred and what we can do to reduce complications. The data base will also provide individual physician reports that will show how each physician compared to their peers in terms of mortality, complications, length of stay, cost per case and other key measures. We will be providing staff physicians with their individual reports.

William Leaver, president and CEO of the Iowa Health System, visited Allen Hospital Tuesday, June 7th. He provided managers with an update regarding Iowa Health System growth initiatives, management development programs that have been put in place and the System’s response to the government’s proposed Accountable Care Organization (ACO) guidelines. The System is on the verge of adding another major hospital system located in Illinois. As this becomes finalized, I will provide you with further details.

Hope you had a great week.

Green Team Wildflower Garden Update

This last hot Saturday afternoon, June 4, a great group of volunteers finished placing the bullet edgings around the moon crescent flower beds, then put metal legs on the arbor and set it into the center of the two crescents. It was amazing to see how everyone worked together to get so much done.

Thanks to the group pictured below and also to Doug, Lesley and Heather Smith for supplying their pick-up and helping us bring two loads of the bullet edgings from Shell Rock Quarry and unload them here at Allen.

We are almost finished with this project. This week we plan to weather-proof the arbor. Anyone interested in a fun project Saturday morning, or at another convenient time, please contact me by email:pederspe@ihs.org

L to R: Thomas Williams, nurse at Allen; Thomas's son, Brad (hat off just for picture), Trish Pedersen, Allen Work Rehab; Ray Pedersen, Trish's husband; Heather Berst, Allen Housekeeping, and her children Brianna and Brandon. Caroline Tharp, Master Gardener (to be) was taking the picture.
