The Allen Hospital board of directors at their most recent meeting approved a significant change to our mental health unit admission policy.  Based on recommendations from administration, staff psychiatrists and the medical executive committee, the unit will accept patients of 15 years of age and older.  Prior to this, we accepted patients as young as 12 years of age.  The age difference doesn’t sound significant, but in fact it is.

The reason for this change is that the physical structure of our mental health unit does not allow us to separate adolescent patients from adults.  Our experience tells us that intermingling patients as young as 12 with adult mental health patients creates a safety risk that can be avoided by utilizing other community options.

Actually, we discussed this issue with management of Covenant Medical Center and found that they have a separate adolescent unit with the capacity to take additional patients of this age.  Based on history, this will amount to around 49 adolescents annually who will no longer be admitted to Allen but will be directed to other options such as Covenant Medical Center.

I want to emphasize that this does not portend a movement away from Allen’s commitment to mental health services.  It would be difficult and terribly expensive for us to alter the mental health unit configuration to the degree we feel necessary for these young patients.  It’s an instance where both hospitals talked and agreed to do what’s in the best interest of patient safety.

If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact me.  Have a great weekend.

Who Is Thinking About Christmas?

It’s only July, who has time to think about Christmas shopping? Waterloo Rotary does – they are in full swing planning their annual December trip to Chinandega, Nicaragua to deliver some Christmas spirit with shoeboxes full of donated clothes, toys and school supplies for over 2,400 children. And they need our help today.

Children in the U.S. get so excited about Christmas – the anticipation of opening packages of toys, games and the newest electronic gadgets. The children that benefit from this Rotary project perceive the holiday much differently. Because of the poor conditions and lack of resources, the children don’t receive gifts from their families or friends. You can help make a difference for a child and put a smile on his or her face by joining hundreds of other Cedar Valley volunteers to help provide Christmas gifts.

The Downtown Rotary Club has asked Allen Health System to fill over 100 boxes. This is a fun project to do with your kids, or get together with your coworkers to fill boxes. And at a cost of $25-30 per shoebox (less if you take advantage of summer sales!) it’s hard to turn down this opportunity to help a child. So, even though it’s months away from the holiday season, let’s all get a little Christmas (in July!) spirit and fill these boxes!

If you are interested in filling a shoebox, please contact Angie in the Foundation office – 235-3960 or
fullerad@ihs.org. Thank you for helping!

Tickets (see sample above) are now being distributed for the associate picnic to be held on Thursday, July 21. The meal will be offered at Allen from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM and also 4:30-6:30 PM. It will be delivered to United Medical Park, Prairie Medical Park, Rosewood, Tower Park and the Pain Clinic. If you do not receive a ticket to the associate picnic by Wednesday, July 20, and believe you should have one, please contact your Department Director.

It’s not too late to submit a healthy living story via Survey Monkey! You have until 5 PM Monday, July 18!

If you have already submitted a story, and have a picture to share, please send it to Kay Willard. Stories will be published in the July 22 Friday Edition.

Be sure to come out for the Picnic Games! They will be located in and around AllenCARE square near Valet Entrance 2.  Four stellar, fit and competitive teams will be participating in a relay this year. The fun begins at 11:30 AM – you won’t want to miss it! There will also be drawings for gift certificates to Average Joe’s and Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping during the picnic games. The drawing is open to those who participate in the picnic games relay and also to those who come out and watch.

Allen College Secures Two Major Grants

Allen College has secured two prestigious, highly-competitive grants.

For the second time since 2009, Allen College is a grant recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program (NCIN). Allen College is one of 52 schools of nursing across the U.S. and the only school in Iowa to receive this funding. Allen College will receive $50,000 for the 2012-2013 academic year to support students in its Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program who are traditionally underrepresented in the field of nursing.

Allen College has also secured a Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) grant totaling $984,559 over three years from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Allen College secured one of only ten grants awarded this year to programs across the country.  Assistant Professor Doreen Mingo will serve as project director and Chancellor Jerry Durham will be co-director. The project period runs from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2014.

The Allen College NWD Project will assist students historically underrepresented in the nursing profession and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities. The project will help provide them the skills, knowledge and resources to successfully enroll in and graduate from a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, pass the NCLEX-RN examination, and enter the professional nursing workforce or pursue advanced degrees in nursing.  The project will further strengthen the cultural competency of the Allen College community of faculty, staff, students and partners in order to remove institutional barriers that jeopardize the success of prospective and current underrepresented, disadvantaged and minority students.
