Diversity [dih-ver- si-tee] Acknowledging, understanding, accepting and valuing the differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation spiritual practice and public assistance status.
Did you know that Cedar Valley is the most diverse community in the state of Iowa? We have a higher percentage of ethnic backgrounds in our area than even Des Moines and Iowa City.
With that in mind, Allen Health System is moving forward to bring more awareness of the variety of people and cultures in our community to you. Allen Hospital has taken the first step by active involvement with a city wide Diversity/Inclusion Task Force that has been formed by the Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber. Allen College has also recently been awarded an exclusive national grant to provide opportunities for minorities and others at Allen College. But next we need your help!

Human Resources is in the process of organizing an active and interested group of employees to form a Diversity Awareness Committee. This group will meet monthly to discuss and actively work on programs that will raise Allen employees’ awareness of our diverse community and the people in it. This group’s goal is to create events, volunteer opportunities and special programs to showcase the Cedar Valley’s special diversity. If you have any interest in being part in this group that will showcase our community, we want you! Send an email stating your interest to participate to Steve Sesterhenn, Sr. Director HR at sestersp@ihs.org.

Pink Fire trucks are coming to the Cedar Valley on Friday, September 9th to show support for women battling cancer and survivors of cancer.
These women will have the opportunity to sign their names on the fire trucks.
The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Guardians of the Pink Ribbon’s two bright pink fire trucks are touring Waterloo and Cedar Falls to share their message of hope and love to the women in our lives.
The pink fire truck campaign is a chance for the community to come show their support and to help raise awareness and funds for local women’s cancer groups. Members of the Beyond Pink TEAM, a Splash of Color, and other volunteers will be providing information about breast cancer awareness, various programs the Beyond Pink TEAM does to help women survivors, and to help raise funds for their activities.

Will You Pick Up Your Box?

I had the privilege of visiting the Chinandaga Rotary project in Nicaragua this summer to where the shoeboxes are delivered. The project is actually located right on the Chinandaga landfill where these kids live and work (eating food and wearing clothes found on the landfill and working on the landfill, collecting “goods” which can be resold). The children who attend school AND are doing well academically are the children who receive these shoeboxes (as a gift for their regular school attendance and hard work in school). Steve Thorpe, a Waterloo Rotarian who visits the project yearly, recently told me that last year at least 200 children did not receive a shoebox because of limited donations. Please consider joining forces with other Allen employees to ensure these last 50 boxes are filled for these very needy kids in Nicaragua. - Denise M. Pralle MSN, RNAssociate Professor, Allen College
You still have one more week to shop! Why not take an extra box to one of your friends, or neighbors or church member to fill. Contact Erin in the Allen Foundation office to pick up your box today!

Impatient Patient
"Hey, is anyone in there....I'm trying to check in for my appointment...I need someone to check my gobbler, and my tail feathers are sorta’ itchy?"
Libby Duffy and Joni Spencer report that this particular patient was pecking at the door of Allen Women’s Health on Vold before office hours the morning of August 31, while Papa and two babies waited for her to be seen.
We’re intentionally withholding her name to preserve patient confidentiality, but it’s clear that Mama Bird knows what she wants and isn’t shy about asking for it.
