Our mission to improve the health status of the communities we serve necessitates our involvement with community service organizations that can positively impact the well-being of the Cedar Valley Area. I have asked all members of Allen management to be actively involved in the community by picking an organization that sparks their interest while having a positive impact. At the most recent management meeting, we took an inventory of what each manager was involved with, and the list is impressive. As an example, Jerry Durham, our Allen College Chancellor, is a member of the Kiwanis Club and was very involved in providing service to the recent air show in Waterloo. The show was viewed very positively and brought in many people who purchased goods and services here in Cedar Valley while attending. It impacted our economy and the morale of this community in a positive way. We have managers involved in the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and many other organizations.

My involvement is with the Cedar Valley United Way, the Cedar Valley Chamber Alliance, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony and Rotary. The Cedar Valley United Way is gearing up for their annual fund raising campaign. This organization looks closely at what are the key needs of the area and then works to raise money to address those needs. Some of the services Allen provides are recipients of United Way funds. Examples include our Child Protection Center and the Allen College-Salvation Army (ACE-SAP) Clinic, which provided over $70,000 of uncompensated service to 679 patients during 2010-2011 academic year. The United Way helps fund the Cedar Valley Food Bank, the People’s Community Health Clinic, child advocate services, emergency shelter services and many other services directed at improving health care, education and overall community well-being.

We will soon conduct a United Way campaign here at Allen, and I am hopeful that you will all contribute something. The key is participation ….even more than it is the amount. It would be wonderful to see 100% participation rate at some level. It’s important to remember that while you may think you are going through tough times, there are always people who have it much worse. The unemployment rate is still high, and many people are worried about getting the bare essentials. United Way is one of those organizations that helps see to it that the essentials are covered.

We Remember

The 2,973 people who perished September 11, 2001 after hijacked planes crashed in New York City in Arlington, Virginia and in Pennsylvania. The victims were mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers of many faiths and races who came from more than 80 nations.  All who were killed died working and living the American dream.

The Spiritual Care Team at Allen Hospital invites everyone to a special 9/11 Remembrance on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 9th, 10th and 11th in  Meeting Room #1. You are welcome to stop by any time during those days from 7:00am to 7:00pm and share a memory, a prayer, or a hope for the future of our country and our world.

Chaplains will also offer services of peaceful remembrance, silent meditation and prayer in the Chapel on Sunday, September 11 at 8:00 am, 2:00 pm and 4:00  pm.
