Remember: you must have attended 75% of Open Forum meetings and have received your flu vaccination to participate in the incentive.
The emergency department is to be commended on its improvement since the last quarter. Their Q3 mean score came in at 87.7, the highest score they’ve seen in recent years. It puts them at maximum in terms of the incentive year to date. Congratulations also go to nutrition and dining services, since Allen’s highest-ranking section scores compared to the large Press Ganey database was for meals, which came in at the 89th percentile. Quality of food, temperature of food and courtesy of those serving meals were all ranked very high.
Despite patient volumes that have fluctuated considerably this year, we remain at Max on the operating margin due to good expense control. Our risk-adjusted mortality is well below the expected.

Blue Zones Project in the Cedar Valley
Changing Environments
Rather than asking people to increase their will power, the Blue Zones Community model works to improve environments. Little changes to home, work, school, social, physical, and policy environments can make healthy choices the easy choices so that well-being improves naturally. When done throughout an entire community, we gain the support of community leaders, employers, schools, government policy as well as friends and family. Together, small changes add up to a huge difference. Our current environment is not sustainable or healthy for our children and future generations. We have the knowledge, expertise, funding and opportunity to make those changes.
Putting it all Together
The Blue Zones Community model coordinates strong existing programs, brings in experts to inspire, train and provide innovative best practices, and ultimately organizes programs to provide greater options for physical, emotional and social health. The project works within our existing city budget, decreases current expenses and qualifies the Cedar Valley for additional grants. Through policy changes and coaching, our community becomes healthier, more productive and creates stronger commerce in a sustainable manner. This project is logical, proven and designed to support existing programs and create new programs through innovation and expert guidance.
We Need You
We need everybody in the Cedar Valley area to pledge to live a healthier life health if given the tools to make small changes to our lives. Please join us in this project. We need your participation to qualify to become a Blue Zones Community! Go to www.bluezonesproject.com, and select "I'm a citizen" and then "Support Your Community."

Celebrate International Orthopedic Nurses Day
|
| Each year on October 30, orthopedic nurses everywhere celebrate International Orthopedic Nurses Day. The tradition began in the United States Senate with a proclamation presented by Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) in 1990 to then-President George H. W. Bush.
Senator Levin said: “Musculoskeletal disease is a major health problem that affects all ages. Conditions such as congenital diseases of infants, trauma resulting from vehicular accidents and degenerative diseases of the aged, strike 23 million Americans. Orthopedic nurses play a vital role in providing professional, competent care to patients with musculoskeletal diseases. They offer the specialty of orthopedic nursing in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, private homes, and physician offices."

ALLEN HOSPICE OFFERS “SEASONS OF GRIEF” SUPPORT GROUP
Allen Hospice is offering “Seasons of Grief”, a special monthly grief support group for individuals experiencing the loss of a loved one. Allen Hospice provides physical, emotional and spiritual care for end-of-life patients and their families in their place of residence, including their homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and hospitals.
“Mourning is a crucial part of the grieving process,” explains Shannon Roder, volunteer coordinator, at Allen Hospice. “Our program encourages participants to talk about their loss and grief, so they can begin to make sense of their emotions.”

Presentations on a variety of grief issues will also be offered. “Seasons of Grief” will take place on the first Thursday of every month, beginning November 3 and continuing on December 1, January 5, February 2, March 1, April 5, May 3 and June 7.
