First Impressions
First impressions matter. What we see and hear make a difference to what we think of people and places. And since I’m the new kid on the block, I want to share my first impressions of Allen with you. I like what I see, and I want you to know why.
You make me feel welcome. I appreciate that personally, but I also admire it professionally. Making visitors, families and patients feel welcome and at ease here helps us provide the best outcome for every patient, every time. Good things happen when people feel secure and comfortable.
I’m taking advantage of your welcome to meet many members of our boards, medical staff and community, and of course I’m meeting more of you every day. I really do like walking the floors so we can meet and talk face to face. I’ll be presiding at the associate forums starting November 30, so please join us. I want to meet you.

I’m impressed with Allen’s financial strength. That’s no accident. Allen continues to do well in a tough economy because you find ways to get things done in an efficient manner. When we keep our focus on our core business - taking care of patients - the financial results take care of themselves.
I’m also excited about our construction projects. We’ll have a sneak peek for all of you next week just before we open the new inpatient rehab unit, and our initiative to build new surgery services over the next two years will benefit patients, physicians and Allen in equal measure. Great hospitals never stop getting better, and Allen is a great hospital.
There’s a reason for that. Allen’s greatest asset is our family atmosphere. We support our patients and families, and we support one another. That doesn’t happen everywhere, but I can tell you from only 10 days on the job that it happens here, and I’m having a fun time becoming part of this family. As we all count our blessings this Thanksgiving, the chance to be part of Allen is high on my list.

Thank you Allen Associates for your contributions to Allen Foundation and the Cedar Valley United Way! United Way co-chairs Dave Braton from The Courier and Ron Steele from KWWL were on hand Monday during the wrap-up party to serve brownies and congratulate associates on a very successful campaign.
Congratulations to Amy Kacher, Pharmacy and Sheila Markham, Emergency Services on winning the ‘Night Out on the Town’ in Waterloo and Cedar Falls! And the five lucky associates who win a trip to Des Moines, complete with a paid day of vacation, are Jana Stumme, Radiology; Joanna Ramsden Meier, Allen College; Christine Behrens, 3 Heart; Matthew Kuester, Plant Operations; Bill Farmer, QI!
The department pizza party will be given to the department with the highest percentage of participation, and we’re giving everyone two more weeks to turn in pledge cards that will count toward that reward, so you still have a chance to participate! Please consider a donation to Allen Foundation and United Way – your department could win!

Dr. Manshadi will be the Medical Director of the Inpatient Rehab Unit. The unit will start with an RN and CNA/UC on every shift, as well as a social worker, nurse manager and program director.
The apartment-like rooms will allow patients to work on activities of daily living, such as cooking, doing laundry, getting in and out of bed alone, etc.
Our goal is to have patients back to or as close to baseline as possible so they can go home.
Look forward to seeing you at our Open House!

Thrivent Financial provided $1,600 in supplemental funds for a total of $8,827. The students took time out to celebrate their success with an event sponsored by area businesses and associations.

National Radiologic Technology Week
November 7-12 marked the annual observation of National Radiologic Technology Week. Radiologic Technology Week provides an opportunity to recognize the efforts of our talented Radiology staff and their contribution to quality patient care. The celebration in the Radiology Department here at Allen included contests, drawings, and plenty of food. Included in the festivities was a unique fund-raiser with an even more unique prize. The contest involved tossing lead x-ray image markers and landing them inside a 12” x 12” square. Participants paid $1 per toss with proceeds going to “Locks of Love.” Locks of Love provides hair-pieces to people who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Our own Chad Bitterman decided to donate his hair for this cause and offered the winner of our contest the chance to chop his hair. Nearly $200 was raised! The game was hotly contested, with Becky Foulk winning the right to wield the scissors. The picture shows Becky happily harvesting Chad’s hair. Thanks to our entire Radiology staff for their excellence and for making National Radiologic Technology Week 2011 a success! |
