What’s Happing with YOC? Heather Roby BSW, YOC Coordinator
We are meeting with community members, youth, and agencies one on one to provide update information about the coalition. Because of low attendance rates to YOC meetings, we decided to provide information on a personal basis. We continue with the same momentum as day one to create awareness and protect our youth of color in Black Hawk County.
To keep you updated will have started a quarterly newsletter. We hope that you enjoy our newsletters and become the change we need in the community. Also look out for our YOC Timeline highlighting our 5 years of service!

National Black AIDS Awarness Day
February 7, 2012 marks the 12th year for the National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The history of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day dates back to 1999 when five organizations funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention decided more needed to be done in the African American Community regarding HIV/AIDS. The following organizations were: Concerned Black Men, Inc. of Philadelphia; Health Watch Information and Promotion Services, Inc.; Jackson State University - Mississippi Urban Research Center; National Black Alcoholism and Addictions Council; and National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS.
The day is marked by events and most importantly education, breaking the stigma and HIV testing. Once a local grassroots effort has become a nationally known day. , LaMont "Montee" Evans, NBHAAD Annual Chairperson states the following “Regardless of where we stand on sexual orientation, religious beliefs/values, age, income, education or otherwise; Black Life is worth saving and working for the betterment of our survival has to become our paramount objective and goal. "I believe the things that are wrong with Black communities, can be fixed by those things that are right with Black communities." So please remember those we have lost, those caught in the struggle, and become an advocate to prevent HIV/AIDS from spreading in our community.(NBHAD, 2012)

One Year of YOC Reflection By: Amberai Pancratz
My past year reflection…
I am amazed at how much I learned this past year working with SIHLE girls and other Youth of Color projects. Going to the training for SIHLE opened my eyes to the importance of what I am doing and why, but also taught me a lot about myself. |
This past year I worked quite a bit with Heather doing SIHLE sessions. We started out with our first one here at Allen Women’s Health during Spring Break. We did a few sessions over the summer, and even got into a church group to complete a session. We did a session with the Impact girls at Carver Middle School and did some afterschool groups at Allen College.
Other trainings that helped me this year with some Youth of Color initiatives included AIDS 101, a training on Domestic violence, and a monthly WOCAN meeting.
I look forward to the upcoming year and getting involved in more SIHLE sessions, branching out on my own, and working more with Heather on Youth of Color projects. |
YOC Events Cuidate is being provided at Expo.
SiHLE is at East High School, West High School, Expo, and Star-C.
