Allen Names 2011 Legends
Eight Allen associates received a very special recognition on January 31 when they were named the 2011 Allen Legends winners and finalists.
The Administrative Team initiated the award in 2011 to honor one clinical and one non-clinical associate who have already been recognized as a CARE Counts All-Star or Ambassador. These associates are already known to their peers for exemplifying the CARE values with highest distinction to patients, families, co-workers and physicians.
This was not an easy decision, so the selection committee named three finalists and one winner in each division. The committee members want to emphasize that Allen Legends finalists and winners are representatives of the best of AllenCare we all strive to provide every day. In honoring All-Stars, Ambassadors and Legends, we honor every associate who goes the extra mile.
Allen Legends winners and finalists had dinner with the Allen Board as Marty Colwell shared their nominations and CEO Tom Tibbitts honored each recipient with a plaque and a check. The 2011 Allen Legends will be featured on a hallway poster that will be placed soon.

Diversity The inclusion of different types of in a group or organization
In 2012 Allen will be initiating a Diversity Awareness Committee. The committee has two goals:
1. Coordinate outreach and volunteerism to needy parts of our community
2. Educate and create awareness about the many diverse groups in the Cedar Valley
In 2012 the committee has created a monthly calendar of events that will recognize different groups and culture in our area. These events will include informational posters, cultural food specials, volunteer events and more.
To get things started the month of February is Black History Month. Be looking for special posters concerning key African Americans that were part of our history and heritage. Special posters can be found near elevator D, in the cafeteria, at Allen College and at UMP. Also during this special Black History Month there will be special food items added to the cafeteria menu and a schedule of outside singers and performers that represent the African American community with scheduled performances in the Allen Hospital cafeteria throughout the month.
Be looking for regular monthly events and opportunities to help others in our community where we can make a difference.
The Diversity Awareness Team currently includes: Sharon Boldon, Jasmine Carter, Mary Clark, Jean Firman, Jenni Friedly, Elisia Heidt-Penrod, Mirian Kauten, Adisa Kudumovic, Trinnette McClarity, Doreen Mingo, Julia Polendo, Heather Roby, Brooke Schlee, Dianne Schultz, Derrell Scott and Steve Sesterhenn.
If you are interested in participating in this group please contact Steve Sesterhenn in Human Resources at sestersp@ihs.org for more information.

Black History Month 2012
Welcome back to Black History Month. As you may or may not know, February marks the beginning of Black History Month, a federally recognized, nationwide celebration that provides opportunity for all Americans to reflect on the significant roles that African Americans have played in the shaping of United States history.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson, considered to be a pioneer in the study of African American history, is given much of the credit for Black History Month. Dr. Woodson took on the challenge of writing African Americans into the nation’s history after the disturbance of the history textbooks largely ignoring the black populations.
In 1926, he developed Negro History Week. Woodson believed that “the achievements of the Negro properly set forth will crown him as a factor in early human progress and a maker of modern civilization."

Dr. Woodson chose the second week of February for the celebration because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the African American populations: Fredrick Douglas (February 14) and President Abraham Lincoln (February 12). Because of his works, Dr. Woodson has been called the “Father of Black History.”
In 1976, Negro History Week expanded into Black History Month which is sometimes referred to as African American Heritage Month. Join me this month in learning about Africian Americans who shaped this country. |

Twenty members of the CASA organization, a group of engineers and computer technologists from around the community, visited Allen this week and toured the Da Vinci surgical robot.
Thank you to Barb and Julie for providing the presentation – they all commented that this is an amazing piece of equipment and that we are so fortunate to have robotic surgical services available in the Cedar Valley.

IMPRESSIVE!
During the Auxiliary-sponsored scrubs sale last week something special happened. Throughout the two days, a number of people wandered into the meeting room looking for assistance in finding their way to other parts of the hospital. The representatives from Scrubs & Beyond were VERY IMPRESSED by the responses of EACH AND EVERY associate who was asked for assistance.
Without exception, every associate gave directions and then left the sale to escort the person to their destination. This was so impressive that the representatives from Scrubs & Beyond wanted to be sure we all know how well our associates treated these requests.
Thank you and keep up the great work. |

Free Class for Family Members Affected by Mental Illness
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Black Hawk County is offering a free 12-week class for family members who have adult relatives with mental illness.
A person who took the class stated, “I think this has been a life changing experience.” According to a new study by University of Maryland's School of Medicine, the class "improves coping and problem-solving abilities of family members” and offers "concrete practical benefits" while demonstrating the value of community-based self-help programs.
The class provides the most effective treatments to promote recovery. In addition, it offers help with problem solving, communication techniques, and strategies for handling crises and relapse. Finally, it covers how to cope with worry, stress, and emotional overload.
The class will run every Thursday from 6:30 to 9 pm starting March 8 and ending May 24. The location is the First Congregational Church in Waterloo, 608 West 4th Street. Contact the NAMI office at 235-5263 or namibh@qwestoffice.net if you have questions or would like to register for the class.
