On Sunday morning, March 11, at 2:00 a.m., the Hospital will go on Daylight Savings Time. This, in effect, will change the clocks from 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Associates who work the night shift, beginning on Saturday night, March 10, should report for duty by 11:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time) as usual, however, they will go off duty at 7:30 a.m. Daylight Savings Time. Associates using their badges with the Time and Attendance System should register "in" at the time they report for work and "out" at the end of the shift, as the Time and Attendance System will make the adjustment for one less hour of pay. The clocks in the Hospital will be changed to reflect this time change early Sunday morning by the Plant Services Department.

Stories of Hope – Organ Donation Awareness Iowa Hospital Association is promoting organ donation awareness and registration and is bringing you four weeks of personal touching stories actually written by some of the people involved. Thank you for your support of this effort.
Our final story in the series is about a sweet baby as told by her mom.

My daughter, Gabrielle was born last February, three months premature and with cardiomyopathy. At just over two pounds and in heart failure, the doctors told us she might not live through the week. Gabby must have heard them, because a week went by and she was still fighting. Our medical team was surprised and happy. I knew they were doing everything to keep her alive.
We were told Gabby would need a new heart if she was going to survive, but her lungs were too small and she was too sick to even be on the waiting list. Again, Gabby must have heard this, because after two months of

fighting to gain enough weight and allowing her lungs to grow and mature, she was listed for a heart transplant. She was doing much better, but to prevent her heart from failing she had continuous medicine through an IV.
Waiting for a heart left us all feeling anxious, but I kept hoping and dreaming that my baby would make it home for her first Christmas. Finally in August, after four months on the waiting list and at just six months old, Gabrielle received her life saving heart transplant at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
Four months of waiting seemed like forever, but we knew how lucky we were to receive a heart so quickly. A month later, she was able to come home for the first time. She is here and doing great now. My dream of spending the holidays with my daughter has come true.
Words cannot explain how thankful we are to the family that donated a heart to Gabby. Their brave decision during an incredible time of sorrow prevented me from losing my own daughter. I will never forget their gift.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics also performed a miracle that day. The doctors, surgeons and nurses never stopped fighting for Gabby’s life. This miracle and everyone that made it possible give “Happy Holidays” a whole new meaning to our family! So, THANK YOU for giving my daughter the gift of life. |
