Allen Hospital Supports Heart Disease Research – Will You Help?

Every year, Allen Hospital supports the American Heart Walk in an effort to fight heart disease and to give support to research working to combat what  is the biggest killer of men and women. But that isn’t enough – we need individuals raising money and participating in the Heart Walk. We have a goal to have 25 teams representing Allen Hospital – and we need people to captain those teams.

What does it take to be a team captain? Not too much! All you need to do is sign up, recruit some of your coworkers and set a fundraising goal. Encourage your team in their efforts! Allen also has a number of fun events to raise money that you can participate in (bake sales, silent auctions, etc.) or you can develop your own unique ideas to raise much needed funding for the Heart Association.

Want to be a captain, or just want to get more information about the Heart Walk? Stop on by! For more information, contact Angie in the Foundation at fullerad@ihs.org or ext. 3868.

  Join Us To Support
the March of Dimes

The "March for Babies" walk is April 28 at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls. We’re having a Team Kickoff on March 27, 2:30pm-3:30pm in the OB Classroom on 3rd Floor. Anyone interested in joining the team is welcome. The money we raise supports programs in our community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. It also funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten our babies.

    DIVERSITY

At Allen we have a group of employees that each month will work on providing all of us some awareness of different cultures around us. So each month you will be seeing posters, internet links, special food items in the cafeteria, etc. to honor special portions of our society and the community around us.

In March we honor two distinct groups of people, Women and Irish Americans. Be looking later this month for special Irish food dishes in the cafeteria. There are also Women’s history posters up at the College, UMP and in the Cafeteria at the hospital. In addition you may want to look at these two internet links to find out how women have shaped our history.

Click here for great moments in women's history as presented by the National Women's History Museum.

National Women's History month is in March.  Click here for fun quizzes on great women throughout the ages.

The Diversity Awareness Committee hopes that these items and other events will help raise your awareness of the others around you.

Be looking for activities in April that will recognize Diversity Month.

March is Irish American Heritage Month
By Miriam Kauten

Irish American citizens of the United States can trace their ancestry to Ireland. As I look at the walls of Jameson’s Pub on 4th Street in Waterloo, I realize that Irish Americans contributed much to our culture - so much more than just the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and corn beef and cabbage. We all have fond memories of family, fun and games during these celebrations. But the truth is that Irish immigrants worked hard and suffered much for their adopted homeland.

Irish men, women, and children first came to America in the 1800’s - 1900’s. Many brought their families here to escape severe famine and unemployment. Single women were less respected in Irish culture, so they came because of the increased opportunities for work, either as domestic staff, or in the clothing industry factories.

Today, there are many famous Americans claiming Irish decent. Twenty-two American presidents claim Irish ancestry, including President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. Mr. Obama states in his proclamation of Irish American Month, “Today, we draw on the indomitable spirit of those Irish men, women and children, whose strength helped build miles of canals and railroads; whose brogues echoed in mills, police stations, and fire halls across our country; and whose blood spilled to defend a nation and a way of life. Defying famine, poverty, and discrimination, they demonstrated extraordinary strength and unshakable faith as they gave their all to help build America.”

Irish Americans also made their mark in medicine and science. Dr. Charles McBurney drew attention to his references about appendicitis, defining the classic pain symptoms still known as McBurney’s sign. More recent pioneers in medicine of Irish decent include Dr. Kevin Cahill. Dr. Cahill continues to reinforce the importance of neutrality and patient confidentiality. “Patients know very well if they have your confidence and can trust that you will not judge them. This confidence provides a way for education and mediation for the good of our patients.” Isn’t that at the heart of why we do what we do?

Help celebrate Irish American Heritage Month throughout March. Until we meet again, I leave you with this old Irish blessing:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
 And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
