Happy Doctor’s Day from AHEC!
While Doctor’s Day traditionally recognizes physicians for the role they play in patient care, the Northeast Iowa Area Health Education Center (AHEC) here at Allen has even more to thank them for. I have the unique opportunity to pair physicians with learners in this area. Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and surrounding communities have an ample amount of students dedicated to healthcare careers who need training and mentoring and the doctors in our area step up to the plate. With residents and MD, DO, PA, & NP students among the other acronyms-in-training, much time is requested from the professionals of Allen Hospital and its partner organizations. Each of these doctors was taught and, now, welcomes the opportunity to teach. While we too appreciate your time and energy spent providing excellent patient care, I’d like to extend an additional thank you for the extra time you take in teaching future providers to do the same! - Brienna Decker, Clinical Outreach Coordinator

Join Our Flag Raising Event on Monday
April is Donate Life month, where we honor and remember those who have given the gift of life to others through organ, tissue and eye donation. Monday, April 2 at 8 a.m., there will be a flag-raising ceremony outside of Entrance 1 where a flag will be displayed for the month to help raise awareness about how to become a registered donor. Please join us for this brief but meaningful time of remembrance and thanks.
Somewhere A Poem by Susan Morgan for her son Drew
Somewhere, your eyes see the earth below... And the skies above.
Somewhere, your heart still beats ever stronger... Full of love.
Somewhere, your legs can play, run and dance.
Somewhere, you've given someone a second chance.
And...
Somewhere, when I'm touched by those who... Again, can live and see...
Somewhere, I know your life goes on... And you're still here with me...
Somewhere.

Myths and Facts about Organ, Tissue and Eye Donation
Myth: Wealthy people can “buy” their way to the top of the organ waiting list. Fact: There is no way to buy a place on the waiting list. Factors like blood type, geographical location, severity of illness and length of time on waiting list, determine organ allocation. Myth: Doctors may let me die so they can transplant organs to other patients. Fact: Health care professionals make every effort to save lives when treating patients. The doctor treating a patient who dies is not involved with donation or transplantation of organs or tissues. Myth: It costs money to donate. Fact: Donation is a gift that costs the donor nothing. Becoming a donor is easy – visit the Iowa Donor Registry at www.iowadonorregistry.org or request a brochure at 1-877-266-6742 to register on the registry. Myth: My religion opposes donation. Fact: All major religions – including Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism – fully support donation. Myth: Signing a donor card is pointless. Fact: Signing a donor card, or registering online with the Iowa Donor Registry, assures that your personal wishes will be carried out. Discussing your decision with family members can alleviate questions or concerns. Myth: Transplants don’t really work – they’re experimental. Fact: Americans receive nearly 26,000 solid organ transplants and 500,000 tissue transplants annually. Transplantation is a standard medical procedure with high success rates. Myth: Donation is painful for the donor’s family. Fact: Studies show that donation provides immediate and long-term consolation.

300,000 And Counting...
Allen Hospital’s Kaleidoscope is a series of live theatre performances we sponsor for school kids each year. We will host 40,000 kids this school year, and we have sponsored more than 300,000 kids since Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center opened and Kaleidoscope began. That’s enough kids to fill the UNI Dome 15 times. We get fan mail from the kids and their teachers after almost every performance, and we thought you might enjoy reading some of their letters. Here’s an example that arrived this week.

Patient Access Drives Healthcare!
We provide quality care in patient registration and all of its support processes to patients, providers, and payors throughout a patient's healthcare experience. Not only do we represent the first impression, becoming the face for the entire facility, but we also serve as the key component in putting every healthcare visit in motion. It all starts and ends with patient access management and we truly do pave the road to success for our patients and our facilities!
Established in 1982, National Healthcare Access Personnel Week is a week-long celebration of the people in the patient access profession. The date marks the anniversary of the National Association of Healthcare Access Management, the only national professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence within the field. The celebrations span the entire week surrounding the anniversary, April 5.
Join us in recognizing healthcare access professionals for their continued accomplishments of service in the healthcare access continuum by celebrating National Healthcare Access Personnel Week, April 1 - 7, 2012!
