Can We Build It? Yes We Can!

Chris Clayton and Jessica Lovrien guided Allen associates through the launch of the Allen IQ4 construction project with a series of 16 March/April meetings. Look for many more meetings and photos throughout 2012 as build our way toward Allen’s Go-Live on Sunday, November 4.

Care Initiatives To Build New Skilled Nursing Home North of Allen College

Care Initiatives will build a 90-bed skilled nursing home facility on 10 acres of land just north of Allen College. Care Initiatives purchased the land from Allen Health System. The new facility will replace the Care Initiatives Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center located at 310 Upland Drive in Waterloo. Construction will begin this fall.

Allen College chancellor Dr. Jerry Durham said that the new facility’s location will provide opportunities for collaboration. “Because we teach nurses and other health professionals, we’re eager to work closely with Care Initiatives. Our undergraduate and graduate programs include primary care nurse practitioner programs that focus on the care of older people,” said Durham.

Since geriatrics is not a specialty most physicians choose, nurse practitioners are expected to provide more care to that age group. Durham noted that while persons 65 years of age and older made up only 13 percent of the U.S. population in 2010, they will comprise 20 percent of the population by 2030, or almost 70 million people. Partnerships like those he hopes to develop between Allen College and the new long-term care facility will be important for the training of these caregivers, Durham said.

Allen president and CEO Tom Tibbitts said the boards of directors of both Allen Hospital and Allen College welcome another new neighbor. “Allen sold land to Hy-Vee and Walgreens for their buildings, and we think selling land to Care Initiatives will help everyone. A new skilled-nursing home means growth for our community.  Locating the new facility near the hospital and college is ideal for care givers, residents and their families.”

In Black Hawk County, Care Initiatives also owns and operates Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo, Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Falls, and LaPorte City Nursing and Rehab Center in LaPorte City.

April – Diversity Month

The month of April is designated Diversity Month. The Allen Diversity Awareness Committee has created  two interesting events that you can participate in:

  • Please go to the following site and tell us how you are different than others…how are you diverse? We will take the I AM comments that you provide and create a poster that will be shown around the Hospital and College. So tell us in simple terms what makes you different:

  • In the cafeteria there will be a map of the world. Near the map there will a box of small stick pins. Please place a pin in the country of your family origin. Were your ancestors from Europe, Asia, Africa, etc.? Place a stick pin on the country that your history comes from.

Also during the month of April be looking for food items on the cafeteria menu that originated from a different country but were Americanized. These will be offered throughout the month of April.

Allen Hospital Supports Heart Disease Research – Will You Help?

Every year, Allen Hospital supports the American Heart Walk in an effort to fight heart disease and to give support to research working to combat what  is the biggest killer of men and women. But that isn’t enough – we need individuals raising money and participating in the Heart Walk. We have a goal to have 25 teams representing Allen Hospital – and we need people to captain those teams.

What does it take to be a team captain? Not too much! All you need to do is sign up, recruit some of your coworkers and set a fundraising goal. Encourage your team in their efforts! Allen also has a number of fun events to raise money that you can participate in (bake sales, silent auctions, etc.) or you can develop your own unique ideas to raise much needed funding for the Heart Association.

Want to be a captain, or just want to get more information about the Heart Walk? Stop on by! For more information, contact Angie in the Foundation at fullerad@ihs.org or ext. 3868.

For more information, visit the Iowa Donor Network website at www.iowadonornetwork.org or visit the café on April 16 where a representative from Iowa Donor Network will be available for questions.

On Monday, April 16, wear blue and green in recognition of Donate Life month.
