April is Diversity Month

The Allen Diversity Awareness Committee would like to know more about you and your heritage. In the cafeteria on the North glass wall near the cashier station there is a large world map. On the ledge nearby there is a box of stick pins. Please place a pin in your family’s country of origin. If you are of Polish descent place a pin in Poland, etc.  If you have a multi-cultural background stick pins in all of the countries that your family history comes from. This will be up for view through the month of APRIL…Diversity Month!

From My Perspective
Deanne Kuenstling, RN, CDE

April, 2012
I want to share with you a journey I have experienced that has made a profound impact on my life. It is my intent and deep desire to share what I have learned, with an ultimate goal to enhance patient care and how we care for each other.

It began in December of 2002, when I transitioned from an energetic healthy woman, to becoming quite ill and very fatigued. I developed a splenic cyst in January of 2003, requiring the volleyball size cyst and spleen to be removed. I describe the fatigue as “unimaginable.”  I would wake up in the morning, after 8 hours of sleep, feeling as though I had not rested at all. Many days I would get to work and feel a sense of accomplishment that I made it from my van to my desk.  The thought of working 8 more hours was overwhelming some days.  Not to mention, I am not just here to “work”, but to “make a difference”, providing top-notch, high quality care to every patient that I see. So, I would say a prayer, gain strength from the Lord and start my work day.

In addition to the fatigue, I began to develop other symptoms; burning in my feet, cognitive changes, balance problems, generalized muscle aches, headaches and stiff neck. The symptoms would come and go in severity. I had days when I functioned fairly well. There were other days when it was a struggle to complete simple tasks.  Nearly 8 years would go by without a diagnosis.

    Grace Ann Powers Scholarship

Allen College student Kayla Peiffer was awarded the Grace Ann Powers Scholarship at the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science – Iowa (ASCLS-IA) meeting held in Cedar Rapids, IA in April 2012.   Grace Powers, a Medical Technologist at Iowa Methodist Medical Center for over 40 years, died in July 2011.

She was affectionately called the “bone marrow lady” to people outside the lab and the “go to lady” for morphology and hematology instrument questions at the Medical Center.  Grace was a hematology instructor in the IMMC Clinical Laboratory Science Program where she lectured on Hematology and Urinalysis. She coached many Student Bowl teams, was a judge at the state level and a participant in the IMMC student-tech bowls.  Because of her dedication to teaching, she touched the lives of many students and peers and made the laboratory a better place because of the quality of her work.

National Student Honor Award from the American Society for Clinical Pathology

Allen College is pleased to announce that Megan Carman, Kayla Peiffer, and Tiffany Servantez  have been selected to receive the National Student Honor Award from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).  ASCP established the National Student Honor Award to recognize students in the laboratory profession.  Awarded annually to students in their final clinical year of study, it is based on academic achievement, leadership ability, community activities, professional goals and endorsements from faculty and community leaders. To be eligible for an Honor Award, applicants must be a student member of ASCP, have a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and demonstrate leadership and community service activity participation.   Through this award, ASCP  acknowledges future leaders for the medical laboratory profession and seeks to make others aware of the profession’s contributions.
