UMP Pharmacy Moves
The UMP Pharmacy is moving back to its original location at 1717 W. Ridgeway today. Last year the UMP Pharmacy changed to a closed-door pharmacy, serving only employees and patients being discharged from the surgery center.  The Pharmacy will no longer be considered a retail pharmacy but instead a hospital pharmacy that functions like the hospital pharmacy at the main campus.  Iowa law requires this pharmacy to still maintain its own license, DEA and pharmacist in charge.  Julie Haefner, RPH will be the manager and pharmacist in charge over this pharmacy location.

This move allows us to maintain the medication management system for the UMP facility and meet the ongoing regulatory challenges we face with Joint Commission, CMS and Iowa law in regard to medication policy and the changes that Epic brings to the medication management system.

We are asking employees to move their prescriptions to the Allen Clinic Pharmacy on the main campus to help us focus on the inpatient work that we need to complete.  For staff who work at UMP, we can still have meds delivered to the UMP Pharmacy as a point of pick-up.  We are still able to handle acute situations for employees at UMP, and we will continue to fill for patients who are being discharged during the specified hours.  Chris Clayton, PharmD, MBA

Time-Out!

Allen perioperative nurses took a time out on June 13, National Time Out Day,  to remind everyone how important it is to take a time out for every patient, every time.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in America. This cultural holiday is as equally important as Independence Day by marking an end to an historical period of oppression, leading to the beginning of a new life for the Nation’s African American population.

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued January 1, 1863, freed slaves in areas covered by the Union Army. Unfortunately, in many isolated areas, owners kept word from their slaves so that they would not flee. On June 19, 1865, some of the last slaves in America were freed when the news at last reached Confederate Galveston, Texas.  Since that day 145 years ago, Juneteenth has been celebrated in America.

Juneteenth honors the African American ancestry who literally gave their blood, sweat and tears to the building of this Nation.  Juneteenth is a time for reflection and rejoicing.  In 1995 The Iowa General Assembly passed the first concurrent resolution in the House recognizing Juneteenth in Iowa, which led to past Governor Tom Vilsack signing legislation on April 11, 2002 making Juneteenth an official annual observance in Iowa on every third Saturday in June.

Some activities that will be taking place in Waterloo are the following: Saturday 6/16/12 at 10:00am Peace Walk, starting at Sullivan Park, and a Veterans health fair 12-4pm. A whole day of activities will take place at Gates Park.
