Allen Shoeboxes Head to Nicaragua
Sixty-eight shoeboxes filled with supplies for kids in Nicaragua started their long journey this morning. Our boxes will be shrink-wrapped for security and shipped south next Wednesday, along with several thousand more boxes from the Cedar Valley. |
| If you helped fill a box, you know what a joy it is. If you still have an unfilled box hiding in your department, we can get it on the trailer truck if we have it by Tuesday, September 18. Bring any remaining boxes to Erin Iverson in the Foundation office. Rotary International and Allen Foundation thank you for your help. You can’t begin to imagine what a difference you make to kids who have nothing but hope and the kindness of people like you. |

“Rosh Hashanah,” commonly known as the Jewish New Year, is one of the most important religious holidays for the Jewish culture. The celebration lasts for two days. This year, it begins in the evening of Sunday, September 16 and ends in the evening of Tuesday, September 18. |
|
In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means the “head of the year.” It is also called the “Feast of the Trumpets.” According to custom, they celebrate Rosh Hashanah by blowing a ram’s horn, a “shofar,” and eating symbolic food such as apples dipped in honey.
In addition, Rosh Hashanah is also observed as a judgment day as Jews believe that God compares the good deeds of a person with his or her bad deeds in the year and based on that, He decides how the next year will turn out to be. Here’s a few interesting facts: • During Rosh Hashanah, majority of time is spent in the synagogue, a Jewish or Samaritan house of prayer, as no work is allowed on Rosh Hashanah • In a traditional Rosh Hashanah meal, a typical dish is fish, served with a wish for prosperity, fertility, and good luck for the coming year. • Unlike other holidays in Jewish faith, Rosh Hashanah does not involve fasting. • On Rosh Hashanah, many Jews follow a custom called “tashlikh” (casting off), in which they walk to a river or stream and symbolically cast of their sins committed during the previous year by throwing pieces of bread into the water.
