Buy a Card, Feed a Child
The Allen Gift Shop is proud to be a partner with Legacy cards to help feed children around the world. A note from Legacy: Making a difference in a child's life. Did you know that each day more than 15,000 children die from lack of food or poor nutrition? Every card by Legacy helps provide a meal or other vital nutritional support to struggling families in the US or around the world. For every card we sell, Legacy gives a percentage of the profits to non-profit organizations helping children and families in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. A family-owned business, Legacy is committed to making the world a better place for all families...one card at a time. Thank you for supporting our legacy of giving. Remember, it's not a card, it's a meal.

In order for Allen employees to have a better understanding of the Blue Zones project, we will choose one of the Power 9 themes to focus on each month. It is important to have a more thorough understanding of each theme in order to grasp the concepts and come up with fun, engaging ways to incorporate them into our daily lives. We are all in this together, so let the encouraging and motivating words to one another begin. Go Team Allen Blue!

1. Move Naturally—more movement daily.
Did you know that less than half of all adults get enough aerobic physical activity to improve their health? With increased access to vehicles, trains, buses, subways, and other forms of public transportation, it becomes much easier to take advantage of these options rather than walking places. Physical activity helps control weight, but it also has many other benefits. Better sleep, living longer, having a lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, and reducing the rate of some cancers are just some of the benefits walking can provide. Finding an extra 10 minutes throughout your day to take a brisk walk is a great way to incorporate the first Power 9 step into your daily life. The great thing about walking is it can be done anywhere—workplace, home, shopping, to name a few places! Here at Allen Hospital, some great things are already taking place, not to mention the projects in the making, to provide an encouraging, positive, and motivating atmosphere to get in the Blue Zone and lead a healthy lifestyle! Listed below are a few ways Allen creates an environment to Move Naturally with ease: “Move on Monday”: A fun way to get some extra walking in while also socializing with fellow associates! Meet at Entrance 1 at noon every Monday for a 15 minute walk around the hospital. If weather permits, the group will take a stroll outdoors, while during colder temperatures there is no need to bundle up—the hospital has plenty of hallway space to walk and get more movement daily. If that time of day doesn’t work for you, gather up 5 or 6 of your walking buddies and start your own “move” group. Walking paths: Currently, Allen is working to provide walking paths on the first and second floor for employees to enjoy. The paths will be clearly marked along the walls every 25 feet allowing you to know how far you have walked. Check this site frequently and stay tuned for more in depth information regarding the Blue Zones walking paths! More ideas on how to have more movement daily in and out of the workplace:

- Purchase a pedometer—inexpensive and easy way to track your daily steps. You can purchase a pedometer at the Allen gift shop for only $5!
- Take 5-10 minutes out of your lunch break to take a brisk walk—anything helps!
- Buddy system—having a walking partner makes it more enjoyable and holds you accountable.
- Compete with yourself—track your progress each day (number of steps, minutes of walking or other exercise, etc.) and try to beat yesterday’s amount.
- Reward yourself after reaching a milestone—5,000 steps a day adds up fast!
