Care Takes Time
It takes time to get test results, call specialists and give you medications and treatments. Our entire Emergency Department staff is here to help you, but it may take longer than you expect to feel better. You can help us by giving us as much information as possible and by asking us questions about things you don’t understand. We want to give you the care you need.

Triage
The Emergency Department  uses a set of standards to decide the order we see patients. Sometimes it’s hard to know how serious a problem is in the waiting room. Ambulances bring sick people into the back too. The triage nurse takes down basic information to start treatment and supervises the patients waiting to be seen. It is important to tell the nurse about the problem that brought you to the hospital.

Allen Emergency Department Quick Facts

• Siemens 128-slice CT scanner: the biggest, fastest, clearest scanner in the Cedar Valley. The new scanner can do a complete body scan of an adult patient from head to toe in just 10 seconds. It scans patients weighing up to 660 pounds. It offers unmatched speed and clarity for diagnosing chest pain, trauma and patients who are unconscious, claustrophobic or obese.
• 24 exam rooms, including special rooms for triage, trauma, orthopedics, pediatrics and behavioral health
• 8 observation rooms for patients who may not need to be admitted to Allen Hospital but are not yet ready to go home
• Enclosed all-weather 3-bay ambulance garage and decontamination room

About the New Allen Emergency Department
The Pauline Barrett Pavilion a new, 70,000-square-foot addition to house the new Allen Emergency Department and new Allen Heart and Vascular Center opened to the public in February 2009. It is now on the southwest side of the hospital, west of the Allen Birthing Center. The new Allen Emergency Department is located on the first floor, while the new Allen Heart and Vascular Center occupy the second and third floors of the pavilion.

Allen’s expansion projects are designed to meet increased demand for services that are vital to healthcare in the Cedar Valley. Allen Hospital cares for more emergency patients than any other Cedar Valley hospital. The current Allen Emergency Department treats 30,000 patients annually. It is a 24-bed Emergency Department. It also houses an impressive 128-slice CT scanner.

The new Allen Heart and Vascular Center centralizes cardiac treatment areas, eliminates the need to transport heart patients to more than a dozen treatment sites that were spread throughout the hospital. The center also includes an inpatient Cardiac Care Unit, covering the entire third floor of the new Allen building.

A $5 million lead gift to the campaign came from Waterloo philanthropist Pauline Barrett. Mrs. Barrett’s gift is the largest donation Allen Hospital has received since its founding by Henry B. Allen in 1925 and ranks among the largest philanthropic gifts in Cedar Valley history.  Allen Hospital associates have pledged more than $1 million to the campaign, making it the largest associate campaign in Allen’s history.
