Allen Hospital’s PGY1 Residency Program is a newer program in 'candidate status' recruiting for two pharmacy resident positions. Application for accreditation through the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists will be filed in 2012 with the first class of residents.

Allen Hospital is a 228-bed JCAHO- accredited institution. As a member of UnityPoint Health, it is among the top health care systems in the nation. The ranking is based on clinical quality and efficiency, according to results of Thomson Reuter’s 100 Top Hospitals: Health System Benchmarks Study. All health systems in the United States with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals – a total of 255 – were assessed for the annual study.

Allen was ranked No. 1 in Iowa for overall cardiac services by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization in 2011; No. 1 in Iowa for cardiology services in 2011, and No. 1 in Iowa for coronary interventional procedures in 2011. Allen has also been designated a recipient of the HealthGrades Coronary Intervention Excellence Award™ four consecutive years, 2008 - 2011.

Allen Hospital is being recognized by The Joint Commission as one of the Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ for 2011 for four measure sets: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care.  Allen is among 620 hospitals being recognized, representing the top 18 percent of Joint Commission accredited hospitals for 2011, the most recent reporting period. Top-performing hospitals met two 95 percent performance thresholds. First, they achieved performance of 95 percent or above on the composite score including all accountability measures for which data are reported to The Joint Commission. Second, recognized hospitals met or exceeded a 95 percent performance target for each and every accountability measure for which they report data.

The hospital features an electronic medical record and bedside barcode scanning with computerized physician order entry. The Department of Pharmacy has extensive automation, technology, and a state-of-the-art IV clean room. The pharmacy provides 24 hour service to inpatients at Allen and also to two rural affiliates, and third shift service for a third affiliate. In addition Allen offers
